This is an oft-overlooked practical strategy. Most folks want to leave their present position because of many frustrations that have built up over a long period. I call this the breaking point. One thing I’ve learned over the past few years (including my experience living and working in Sao Paulo) is you have to train yourself to recognize problems, be it bad bosses, low pay etc., early.
Your gut feeling may be strong enough to know you have to change. It is often at odds with external pressures such as raising a family, debt, lifestyle desires etc.
The transition to something that is pulling you (as you have reminded me many times) is much more manageable and desirable. Focusing toward a change is more enabling rather than being pushed out of a job because of constant frustration.
Being self aware and recognizing various elements about your life and where you want to go early is key.
